I have been posting a bunch of my music on Instagram for the past few years. Last year turned out to be specially prolific for lazy person like me, mainly because I decided to join #Jamuary2018 and was posting a short piece every day for the month. Later in the year we organised Fat Finger Mayhem, a day long creative coding workshop and Algorave event. To celebrate the event I was posting an algorithmically generated piece as a lead up to the event (Look up #FatFingerMayhem on Instagram).
To collate all of this activity I was copying and pasting Embed codes from the Instagram website everyday. Soon my laziness kicked again and I needed to figure out an easier way. A quick google search turned up a few different options including Instafeedjs, and Installing a jekyll plugin. I am particularly averse to pulling things in with JS so the Instafeedjs wasn’t particularly appealing, and being a PHP programmer in the past I couldn’t possible get my hands dirty with Ruby (yeah I only ironically use Jekyll for hosting my personal site (not really, its just easy, convinent and free on Github)).
Anyway, I happened upon this answer from Stack Overflow, but this again would pull an embed block from Instagram’s API. Fine for single posts, but didn’t exactly work for 30 - 40 odd posts I would possibly be possibly including on a page. The approach didn’t seem too bad though so I decided to modify it a little.
Make a new file in the "./_includes" folder of your Jekyll repo, I decided to call it instagram.html (yeah, how creative)
I decided to copy almost everything from Instagram’s suggested embed block. Here is everything with a slightly better formatting.

I referred to the postid I took from Instagram and replaced it with the include variable include.id. I could find three instances of this in the current version.
